Tomb of the Golden Bird 1st Edition/1st Printing 9780641861192 Books

The Emerson family is in Egypt in the early 1920's. The tomb of Tutankhamon has not been discovered yet, but all the signs lead to that discovery being very near. Howard Carter is an acquaintance of Emerson and Amelia, but there has been a falling out. Carter is a person who has become overwhelmed by his own self-importance.
Emerson's heart is broken because he will not be one of the first ones to see all the treasures to be found. Even from a distance, he is keeping watch to make sure that all protocols are being followed in order to ensure the safety of all the treasures to be found.
It is nearing Christmas, and the entire family is gathering to celebrate.
But as always in this family, there are mysteries in every direction. Sethos, Emerson's half brother has arrived unexpectedly. He is suffering from malaria, but he is also being followed by villains because of his work for the British Home Office. Emerson and his son Ramses have been assaulted. Gargary their elderly butler is kidnapped. There is danger afoot.
Elizabeth Peters wrote the Amelia Peabody books with a sure knowledge of archeology and a wonderful sense of humor. She created characters who were amusing and adventurous and most of all wonderfully human creations.
Amelia is a woman who is never in doubt of her superior knowledge. She is a manager of people, events and lists. She is well loved by her husband Emerson, her son Ramses and daughter-in-law, Nefret, her grandchildren and a great number of family and friends. Although she is overbearing and bossy, she continues to be surrounded by people who admire her.
Emerson is a man of honor. He has pointed out certain conditions which point to the discovery of the tomb of Tut. But, because he let his sense of honor get the better of him, he has been excluded from any involvement with the discovery. He is a man who loves his wife and family beyond measure. Everything about him is larger than life.
This story has murder, spies, plots and a great deal of adventure. Although it is part of a series, this book can be read as a stand alone. But, if you have never read any of the Amelia Peabody books, you are doing a great disservice to yourself.
Because the background of this story is the discovery of Tut's tomb, there are many descriptions and discussions of archeology. That is one of the things I have always enjoyed about this series.
I enjoyed this book. And that enjoyment has brought home to me, the wonderful hours I have spent sharing time with Amelia, Emerson and the entire cast of characters.

Although, for me, there were slow spots which were not quite what I expect from Amelia, this is still one of the wonderful Elizabeth Peters' best books.

Tomb of the Golden Bird 1st Edition/1st Printing 9780641861192 Books Reviews

I always enjoy Elizabeth Peters' works, and Barbara Rosenbladt is wonderful as the narrator. The Tomb of Tutankhamen has fascinated people since it's rediscovery in 1922, and the first-hand telling of the story was very enjoyable. My greatest wish is to visit Egypt and see all the great sights, which seems more and more unlikely with the unrest going on, and reading or listening to Ms. Peters' novels is a good vicarious way to enjoy them. My great regret is that we will have no more Amelia Peabody Emerson stories from this wonderful writer.
It is with a heavy heart that I read the final line in this book, knowing this would be the final installment in the series. The Emerson’s and their retinue had become “close” friends, each new adventure to be savored. The book did not disappoint.
I will not read the final book, River in the Sky. Elizabeth Peters wrote her conclusion to the Peabody/Emerson adventures, so it shall be.
If Elizabeth Peters stories of the Egyptian archaeology family of Amelia Peabody and her husband Professor Radcliffe Emerson have not come your way. If you love stories with characters that are a delight, mysteries that always have more twists and turns, I am sure you will enjoy this story. It tell of the discovery of King Tut's Tomb. The author is a for real Egyptian Archaeologist so you the pleasure of reading an actuate account about Carter's discovery of the tomb and a mystery with a delightful and sometimes humorous group of characters. I loved reading this book and also loved listening to it. This is a story that tells you the history of digging in the East Valley, the discovery of the tomb along with a group of villains, odd characters, and the delightful Emerson family and their friends.
I absolutely loved this book. It is not the final Amelia Peabody book in the series but, it is the last one in the timeline. All of the books that follow this one come before this book in the timeline. I started reading this book with a heavy heart. It has taken me close to 2 years to read through this series and get to this book. I have become attached to all of the characters, and it was sort of bittersweet to read this book. Elizabeth Peters wrote this book in such a wonderful way. Of course we would have had the Emersons be the excavators of King Tut's tomb. Since we cannot rewrite history, Elizabeth Peters manages to write a plausible story about the Emrerson family and the how involved they are, or are not with the tomb. Without giving any spoilers, I really liked how Elizabeth Peters ended this book. I do not want to say more except that at the end of the book, you feel as good as you can feel at the end of a series that you have invested a lot of time and emotion in. Please do yourself a favor and read this book. If you have not started the series, start at Book 1 and read them in the order that they were written. It is such a lovely story and an intriguing family to follow.
