This was different than what I expected. It's a short, quick read, almost novella length and could probably be read by younger readers too, (though there is a bit of violence that you'd want to take into consideration with younger readers). In fact, it reminded me of some of the plots of the cartoons my kids watch, especially classic Voltron-type cartoons, only with this book it's a royal court and fairies and war instead of robot lions. Pugsley packs a lot into a short space, sometimes too much. I would have liked to see parts of this expanded and elaborated, but the premise was interesting (and caught my children's attention right away though my younger daughter hasn't had a chance to read it yet).

War and Chess by Helen M. Pugsley is a refreshing coming of age story with a strong female protagonist. It starts out with the young Princess Amethyst acting as a naive young lady taking full advantage of her luxurious royal position. However, she soon finds that she must take on adult responsibilities of preparing for war and helping to protect her kingdom forcing her to grow up quickly. I do not want include spoilers in this review but I was drawn to the characters and the magical world the author created in where humans share their kingdom with various types of fantasy creatures like Centaurs, Minotaurs, and fairies, oh my! War and Chess is a creative little story and shows the promise of Ms. Pugsley as her debut novel. I eagerly await the next installment of Princess Amethyst.

Love fantasy novels and Helen really put a lot of heart and soul into her characters and the theme of. Interested in her continuing on. Good reads.
I enjoyed the fantasy elements in this book along with a clever heroine that solves her own problems along with those of her nation. Helen has a great sense of humor that is sprinkled throughout the story.
This is a highly creative approach to conflict issues -- and I commend the writer for looking at war/conflict as a chess game. This is an enjoyable 'ride' with a sensitive caring young female out to save her family kingdom. A good example of youthful female power.
