I am a huge fan of Sabrina Jeffries. I have loved her books for quite some time.

I was not crazy about this one.

I did not like Anthony very much. He was trying hard to take care of his niece and protect her from a bad situation. That is admirable. But, he also acted like a bully toward Madeline. He did not listen to her refusals. After a time, I felt he was too overpowering.

Madeline was a strong young woman who had a plan. But, this reader did not understand all the ins and outs of the plan. I just felt as though things were not explained fully. She is supposedly trying to be a good and honorable teacher for young ladies. But, she apparently could not keep her mouth shut and kept inserting herself into conversations which did not involve her.

On one level, I do understand her depth of her concern for her Father. That was admirable, but even that seemed to come and go. Her high ideals were not always in evidence.

Maybe it was simply my frame of mind, but I could not get enthusiastic about either one of these people.

The plot and situations of the period were interesting to me. Looking back it appears that people of the Regency period were as foolish and impetuous as people are today.

I am a huge fan of Ms Jeffries and I intend to read her books because they are always fun reads.

Let Sleeping Rogues Lie The School for Heiresses Sabrina Jeffries 9781416551515 Books Reviews

As a reader who has just recently stumbled across Jeffries' work, I have been thoroughly enchanted by her style and sense of humor. With the HEA a given (and damned well expected in romance), it's the writer's ability to create unique and interesting characters, set them up to fall in love, and then devise the subsequent twists and turns that take them on a believable journey to that coupling. To that end, this novel was utterly satisfying.

The two central characters are delightfully original, especially our heroine Madeline, who is one smart gal. The hero, Anthony, Lord Norcourt, is complexly characterized as a lonely man acting out as a carefree rake. Their journey is especially well expressed in this book, superior to most stories I have read in this genre. I didn't have the same experience as other reviewers here who saw Madeline as selfish in her drive to save her father. I never felt that the risks the characters take truly endanger Anthony's niece's future. There are clearly other ways for Anthony to convince a judge to give him guardianship, but he is trying to avoid those due to their embarrassing and private nature.

If you like an intelligent female lead and an aggressive masculine hero who is not threatened by a smart woman, but who is a bit lost and lonely--thus ripe for falling in love with that smart, practical woman--you'll enjoy this story. The hero and heroine are still quite young, so any miscalculations they make are in keeping with their lack of experience, not flawed moral values (IMO). Jeffries does an excellent job of setting up their story, giving the reader an original, compelling historical romance. I fully bought into their love. It was a most rewarding read and I'll likely reread it again after finishing up the series, just to spend time again with Madeline and Anthony. As an added plus, Jeffries delivers the best perfectly hot but tasteful sex scenes I have found yet in historical romances. Highly recommended.
Madeline and Anthony's story is my least favorite of this series so far. For some reason, the writing felt off with this one. I didn't feel for the characters--actually, I guess I did, but not in the way intended. There were instances where the hero came across almost as sex addict rapist in the making, and parts where he (in his POV) deliberately interpreted Madeline's reactions to suit his own beliefs that she desired him when she herself doesn't even acknowledge this until much later on. Anthony goes from being obsessed with sex to being a perfect, compassionate gentleman with no thought of sex at all at intervals throughout the book and the inconsistency in his character grated quite a bit. The explanation and resolution to his actions also felt very incomplete to me and I was left feeling that Madeline somehow fell victim to his machinations. She was fully willing to fall on a sword (and throw her father on one too) in order to save a niece she'd never met, without much evidence that it was necessary. I expected more from a scientifically-minded person, and her sacrifice didn't make me feel any better about her relationship with Anthony, either. This being a romance, the point is belabored quite a bit that she does love him... but I still can't be sure if it's because of HIM, or because she felt moved to pity by his troubled past.

As for Mrs. Harris and Cousin Michael... at one point I wanted to slap Michael. Even knowing why he responded the way he did, his words were hurtful, cold, and immature, and completely unlike his usual supportive self. Can't say I liked either of the relationships in this book. They both left a bad taste in my mouth.
