Sherlock Holmes in London

Charles Viney is the co-author of three humorous books. One was a satire on astrology (“The Bad News Zodiac”), another was an expose of the world of self-help (“Having It All”). “Classic London Shopfronts” was a photographic record of London’s old shopfronts. He spent two years searching old archives to find contemporary photographs of the places mentioned in Conan Doyle’s stories. Viney lives in North London with his wife and son. This book has over 200 original old photographs taken between 1879 and 1914 of places that are linked to events in the stories. This 1995 book has a ‘Contents’, ‘An Atlas of Victorian London’ in its 168 pages. The city of London is still recognizable despite the Blitz and urban redevelopment. Viney omitted the stories set outside London (‘Introduction’).

There are eight unnumbered chapters, each one named after a long story or a collection of short stories. Here is the list.
1) A Study in Scarlet.
2) The Sign of Four.
3) Adventures of Sherlock Holmes.
4) Memoirs of Sherlock Holmes.
5) The Return of Sherlock Holmes.
6) The Hound of the Baskervilles.
7) His Last Bow.
8) The Case Book of Sherlock Holmes.

There are quotes from the stories to accompany each picture. The text seems to be chosen to fit the picture. Since a picture is worth a thousand words there will be no further descriptions here. Conan Doyle was usually very specific in his London addresses and locations, only making changes if a criminal act occurred there (p.7).

Sherlock Holmes in London A Photographic Record of Conan Doyle Stories Charles Viney 9780831718893 Books Reviews

This is an excellent addition to any Holmes collector's library. Each story from the cannon is represented by several snippets of test from the story, and accompanied by era photographs. This makes reading/rereading the original tales very interesting when referencing this book.

I highly recommend this to anyone new or old to Sherlockania. Capital!
Charles Viney should be thanked for tracking down pictures from the Victorian London of Holmes of 1874-1914. The over 200 pictures included are all related to the stories and Viney includes a short excerpt from the story mentioning the scenes pictured. For example in the Red-Headed League Holmes remarks "Sarasate plays at the St. James's Hall this afternoon ... What do you think, Watson?" and Viney has not only a picture of St. James Hall but also a playbill of Spanish violinist Sarasate's concerts form 1896! All pictures are indexed to a London man of 1888, reproduced in 12 pages in brown ink, mostly legible with a magnifying glass The street scenes are my favorite, such as Fleet Street or Hyde Park, with people bustling around, in bowlers or top hats (and in an interesting picture at Cannon Street Station, a man is carrying a bird in a cage). Viney includes his own deductions about the stories, and includes a picture of the Museum Tavern as the "Alpha Inn" in the Adventure of the Blue Carbuncle. There are plenty of pictures of train stations and cabs (many with advertisements on them, for example Nestles milk). A reader can almost imagine Holmes inside the hansom cab pictured at Baker Street in 1900. I suggest readers of this book, would also enjoy Michael Harrison's In the Footsteps of Sherlock Holmes.
