What verified purchasers are saying -

- Like a blockbuster action movie in paperback.

- an intelligently written, action packed thriller with historical details thrown in the mix... Vessel brings the excitement of history and intrigue into one can't-put-down page turner.

- action, suspense, and lots of thrills.

- Grade A. I happen to be a huge fan of medieval and action/suspense tales. This story incorporates both themes.

- In a word - Brilliant! Exceptionally well written... Full of action, danger, a little history mixed with fantasy, and a beautiful love story.

- Lots of history in this book that made me review my knowledge of past ages. Killer ending!

- moves at a ripping pace and left this reader breathless at the denouement.

- Terrific book. I had time to start a book, but like an argument better make sure you have time to finish it. Absolute cliff hanger, in spots literally but throughout with twists and turns.

- Absolutely brilliant book that moves along at a hell of a pace.

- It has drama and danger. It has suspense and surprises. There’s a hint of romance, religious musings and a heap of revenge. Fighting, fear, family, friendship, feuds.

- I loved this story, the phrasing, the unrelenting pace, the scope...

- Absolutely brilliant book... John Bowen is an author that takes a Genre, sticks it onto a trolley and dissects every part of it!

- By chapter two I was hooked. The book took an unexpected turn that covered the crusades and Templar Knights, from east to west, right to the current time. It was action packed right up to the end.

- a damned good tale. Lots of twists and turns crammed into both 24 hrs and a thousand years. Excellent.

- nice injection of history, fantasy, love story. The pace started off well and gained momentum. Very action-filled ending.

- I loved that the novel was fast paced from the very beginning, the characters were interesting, and there was even a bit of romance. The lead female is a strong, smart woman, not some boring ditzy girl (thank you).

- I was too caught up in the historical intrigue and action scenes to consider the deeper meanings until it was all woven together at the end.

- There is something for everyone in this book – lots of action, medieval history, secret societies, epic gun fights – truly an exciting read.

- Wow this book was brilliant and very fast-paced. I loved it!!!

Vessel edition by John Bowen Literature Fiction eBooks

I really enjoyed Bowen's first book, and was looking forward to his next one. I was not disappointed.
Vessel is very different from Where The Dead Walk, and yet it's not. Both novels shine because the plots are undergirded by complex characters, sweeping themes, and a frank look at the state of men's hearts.

The novel contains a story within a story, but they are well woven together, and each enhances the other. There is a common character in both stories - a mysterious vessel that holds tremendous power. Ancient madmen lusted after it, and modern governments desire to possess it in order to achieve greater power. Caught in the middle between these two factions are a Special Forces commando and his estranged wife who is a scientist researching this mysterious object.

Bowen includes some thrilling action scenes (I'd love to see this as a film) and provides detailed history on the Crusades and Knights Templar. While I avoid books that speculate on sacred subjects, this is not a DaVinci Code wannabe that seeks to discredit, debase, or debunk faith in a Holy God. This is a character study of everyday men, and an honest portrayal of how wicked our inclinations can be, especially when we are deluded enough to think we have divine approval for heinous acts. Noble men stand up against the power hungry. Sacrifice for the greater good is contrasted with selfish avarice. Oh, how I wish that the good guys always prevailed, but history teaches otherwise.

In the end, the two stories really become one story. It's always been one story. The characters, customs, and eras change, but humanity remains the same. Men will still risk all to grab power, threaten all to build themselves a throne, and seek to destroy all to ensure their reign. Conversely, there will always be men who risk all to save others, endure great trials to battle evil, and willingly bear the point of the sword if only the woman they love can be spared. Vessel plumbs the depths of men's hearts and exposes its findings without bias or judgment. I was too caught up in the historical intrigue and action scenes to consider the deeper meanings until it was all woven together at the end. Ultimately, I finished the last page with satisfaction and a touch of sadness.

Vessel edition by John Bowen Literature Fiction eBooks Reviews

I was on the fence about this book. I love an action/thriller tale but generally stay away from religious base tales.

I'm glad I gave it a try. The religious link is strong but as a whole only gives us the mechanism for the characters to have conflict.

There are two parts to this book. The present and the past. Both are needed for the tale to make sense. We have the present obviously, but we need the past to give use the history of the artifact at the center of this life and death struggle. We also need it to explain some of the characters involved as in this case at least, time does not have much meaning.

It's not hard to imagine what people would do for ultimate power, especially those with evil intent but even those who believe that to serve God a scorched earth policy is best. Power is best left with those who don't want to use it.

An extremely vivid tale of how the struggle between good and evil is never ending and draws in the innocent leaving scars and myths through out time.

If you're on the fence like I was then give it a try as I did. You just might be pleasantly surprised at how much you'll enjoy it.
This is another John Bowen genre-bending tour de force. A self-described multi-genre author, you’ll find this the perfect, if unlikely, blend of historical fiction, paranormal fiction, action-thriller, and techno-thriller. But lest you think this a highly experimental and wholly unorthodox storytelling technique, I should tell you I’ve found that Clive Cussler and James Rollins (two of my favorite authors) blend their stories together in just this fashion. And they’re loads of fun. So it is with The Vessel.

Our action-thriller hero, who it is clear from the get-go would be far more comfortable in your standard FBI Special Agent investigation, is drawn into the most unusual case of his life when an all-too-familiar woman (the love of his life) calls him and explains that she’s in need of his special skills if she’s to survive the night. Now, I should tell you, that at the outset of the story these lovers are entirely estranged and their relationship ended one-too-many life-and-death missions abroad ago, one more than she could take, anyway. But he can’t exactly say no to her plea for help, and well, I mean, what a made-to-order setup if he ever hopes to reconcile with her.

Reconciliation will have to wait, however. First they have to escape the people after what’s in her shiny metal case. Turns out their kind have been protecting this secret for millennia. And that’s where the story shifts to historical fiction for the backstory before bringing us back to the present. But it’s not history like you know it. The history you know, apparently, has been manufactured to keep you from the truth. And the real story behind the lies is one wild ride you’ll just have to experience for yourself.

Highly recommended for people of fine minds and discerning tastes. Plebeians and small-minded types should probably stick with stock and trade genre fare, lest they blow a fuse. (Apologies. It’s late at night and I’m feeling a bit cheeky.)

His Death Stalks Kettle Street was one of my favorite novels of Q1, 2017. This one seems to be destined to make my favorites list yet again for Q2, 2017.
