Old Men at Midnight Stories Ballantine Reader Circle Chaim Potok 9780345439987 Books

It is well written... but a bit disjointed and weird, especially the last story where there is either a ghost or an illusion repeatedly described but never explained. Very grim and sad content, but on valuable topics.... worth reading on that basis. Although the somewhat elusive writer is supposedly a character from another of his books, it doesn't really connect in any meaningful way.

Enjoy Chaim Potok book's
I totally love books by this author
I love his stories & writing - this was interesting but , for me not his best.
I enjoyed reading these 3 separate stories which brilliantly jump from emotionally touching to stunning and chilling.
I found the whole book of less literary quality than Davita's Harp, but I still couldn't put it down either, especially when reading the second story.
As always, Chaim Potok is the master of storytelling. The three novellas are connected through Davita (of "Davita's Harp). The "Ark Builder" is a sensational story that captures the emotions of a young survivor of the Holocaust. The second story concerns an ex-KGB officer and professional tormentor whose position was to extract confessions from people, both the guilty and innocent. Finally, we see a man facing his own mortality and his wife's impending death from AIDs. This is stortelling at its best from the master. Perhaps the best thing about Potok is his ability to write for all ages.
Three character sketches, three takes on history and memory, three people on the edge of sanity, three tales of survival -- four, if you include the recurring character of Davita. I wish that each of the Novelas were novels. The stories were engaging but the reverberations in the reader soul go on when the reading is finished.
This book is written by a Master writer and he accomplishes in few words tons of emotions. I cannot say enough about how this book moved me. It was written in a bygone time that no one should ever be allowed to forget or deny.
